Selena Quintanilla Perez (Spanish pronunciation"se'lena, kinta'nija, -- April 16, 1971 - - March 31, 1995), known mononymously as Selena, was an American Tejano singer. Selena was known as the "Queen Tejano music", her contributions to music and fashion led her to be one of the most well-known Mexican-American entertainers of all time. Billboard magazine placed her at third place in 2020 in their "Greatest Latino Artists List of All Time", which was built on Latin music and Latin albums. Her attire earned her the name "Tejano Madonna". Her clothes choices also make her among the top Latin artists. Quintanilla and Suzette Quintanilla. Her reputation was frequently discredited in the 1980s , and was barred from bookings at Texas venues for her performance of Tejano music, a predominantly male-dominated genre. Her popularity grew when she won the Tejano Music Award as Female Vocalist-of-the Year in 1987. She won it nine times. The singer signed with EMI Latin in 1989. The self-titled debut album released the following year. Her brother became her principal music producer and writer. Entre a Mi Mundo (1992) was a top album, reaching number 1 on the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums Chart for eight consecutive months. The album's commercial success led music critics to call it the "breakthrough" recording of her musical career. One of the singles, "Como la Flor" was one of her top famous songs. Live! (1993) was awarded the Best Mexican/American Album at the 1994 Grammy Awards, becoming the first recording by a female Tejano artist to win this award. Amor Prohibido became one the most sought-after Latin albums in America in 1994. It was praised by critics as the first Tejano music album to be commercially viable and quickly became one of the most loved Latin subgenres of Latin music of the time.
